Winti presents a multi-layered cosmos

Winti is the Afro-Surinamese religion that developed in Suriname from West African spiritual traditions (especially Akan, Fon/Vodun, and Yoruba influences) blended with local and other elements during the era of slavery. It is centered on the supreme creator Anana Kedyaman Kedyanpon (also spelled Anana Kedoeaman Kedoeampon or similar variants), a high God who is generally distant. People primarily interact with a large hierarchy of intermediate spirits called winti.

The spirit world is organized into four main pantheons (sometimes a fifth related to the realm of the dead among certain Maroon groups). Each pantheon is linked to a natural domain and has its own leading figures and subordinate spirits.

Overall Hierarchy (Simplified)

  1. Anana Kedyaman Kedyanpon – Supreme Creator
  2. Higher / Great Winti (powerful deities who stand close to Anana)
  3. Intermediate / Lesser Winti
  4. Lower entities (including some ambiguous or potentially harmful spirits such as Bakroe)

Lower Entities and Other Beings

Below or alongside the main pantheon spirits are various lower or more specialized entities:

  • Bakroe (Bakru) – Generally classified among the lower or more ambiguous spirits. Often seen as a servant-type being that can be directed by higher winti or by humans. Associated with tasks, wealth, or harm, and requiring careful handling.
  • Leba – Sometimes placed with earth spirits; a crossroads/cleaning spirit that can clear negativity.
  • Jorka / Yorka / Djumbi – Spirits of the dead or restless dead.
  • Ancestral spirits (Kabra) and personal spiritual components of humans (Kra, Dyodyo, Yorka) also play major roles in daily spiritual life.

Key Characteristics of the System

  • The hierarchy is flexible rather than rigidly fixed. Rankings and relationships can vary between Creole and Maroon communities, and even between individual practitioners or families (bere).
  • Higher winti tend to have stronger moral awareness and are less easily “manipulated.” Lower spirits are more likely to be directed for specific practical purposes (including work related to wealth or conflict).
  • Spirits are believed to marry, form families, and have preferences (food, colors, taboos, music, dance styles).
  • Rituals (winti prey) involve drumming, dance, offerings, and possession, allowing spirits to communicate directly through mediums.
  • Balance between the pantheons and proper respect for ancestors and personal spirits is considered essential for health and harmony.

In short, Winti presents a multi-layered cosmos in which a distant Creator stands above a rich, elemental hierarchy of spirits. Mama Aisa often functions as the central maternal authority among the active deities, while powerful groups such as the Kromanti and more ambiguous lower beings like the Bakroe occupy distinct places within this ordered yet dynamic spiritual world.
